I’m really so glad to be an exchange student, because I’ve recieved so many new experiences and challenges. Most of them have been great, but I’ve also had really rough times. Then you have to keep in mind the good times and not give up. Talking with others about your problems is often a hard way, but definitely one of the best.
I go to a private Catholic school, with school uniform, because I got a scholarship. We have around 130 students and 12 teachers in our school. Because this is such a small school, everybody knows everyone very well. If you hang out with a girl from another school on the weekend, you get asked if she is your girlfriend on Monday. Interesting news flies through the town in less than one day. This was something very new for me, because I’m not used to this in Cologne Germany with a population of around one million people.
During the first half of my exchange year, I had the pleasure to visit New York City twice. I also saw a lot of my state (area), because my host dad took me to baseball and football games where he worked for a TV station. Because of different reasons I changed my host family after about 2 months. I moved in with the family of my best friend, who is an exchange student from Brazil. The family consists of 5 people now. We have a 6 year old host brother, who is really nice. I’m so glad and thankful that they took me in their home, even though it was definitely not easy for them. We have such an awesome time together, there is always someone who I can talk to and we spend as much time together as possible.
I’ve had many ups and downs during the last 6 months. We spent a week at Walt Disney world and while we were there, I got news that one of my best friends died in a car accident. It’s going to take some time to get over this tragedy, and get back to my normal life style. My family, friends and community are helping me through this difficult time in my life.
I would like to thank every single person, who has helped me during the last 5-6 months to make my exchange year as nice as possible.
I would especially like to thank my family, my organization, my school and my host family who gave me this once in a lifetime opportunity.
